If FEMALE is disrespectful when referring to a woman, why do those who claim they fight for women's rights call themselves FEMinists? The term did derive from female, correct?

I've tried to understand the concept that "female is offensive" as well.

It's been explained that "female" is offensive because it can have the effect of simplifying a woman down to her genitalia. I've also heard the argument that such a term is how one would describe an animal in academia.

I've not been comfortable accepting these points as persuasive.

It seems that female has the same equity as male and I don't see how one would be offensive and the other not.

Interesting convo, though.

The term "Female" doesn't offend me but you are definitely reaching with this one. :martin:
Please tell me where the term feminist derived from? And obviously it doesn't offend all but there's a big segment of women who find it offensive. I am genuinely asking, where's the reach?

AS EXPLAINED TO ME: "Female" is a scientific term that refers to the sex of a species that is capable of producing children. The term "woman" refers specifically to human beings, while "female" could refer to any species.:troll:

Anything is offensive if you do it knowing that it bothers someone when in reality it makes no difference to you one way or the other.

Now this is an important point.

Regardless of whether I understand it or not, if I can help it, I won't purposefully use the term while.in conversation with someone I believe is offended by it.

An example would be: you could easily called her a lady or by her name. But instead you choose to call her female even though you know it gets on her nerves. Thats why its offensive not necessarily the literal word.
