its a difference between not listening to music and not being 100% on the topics being rapped about
say a young person heard that song, they probably wont know of billie holiday - strange fruit, and if i was into the voting process i wouldnt know he created the flag, but i can research it and find out, u think u got everyline in every song?
true, there is a difference, but some of this stuff is obvious, and when people are shocked/surprised /enlightened/etc, it shows they don't truly listen to the music...we live in a fast food society and it even shows in music...when people get new music, instead of actually listening to it, they skim through it looking for the most simplistic shyt to call hot...if it's something they gotta sit and listen to, it gets called whack and/or dismissed...it's not until either they just hear it playing in the background while chilling or someone breaks it down to them, that they actually pay attention to what is said....and it shouldnt take that..
as for not knowing billie holiday or the reference, true, they might not, but in that case investigate further and learn...especially in this case, cause that's our history...every black man should know that song or at least what it pertains to...
do I think I got every line?...no, but I got a lot of them/the majority cause I take the time to listen to the music....the ones I might've missed are usually pointed out to me by my cousin or friends that listen closely to music like I do....

People act like MCHG was so great by pointing out a few clever lines, but refuse to listen to a whole album full of clever lines because it's too much for them. You are exactly the audience Jay was aiming for when he said he dumbed it down to double his dollars.

The album has more than just a few clever lines though. Just because you didn't get them, doesn't mean they aren't there.
Also, a album full of clever lines is useless if the artists sucks at making actual songs, his delivery and flow is garbage, or he has weak beat selection. Hov has never had any of those problems.

Hov had a problem on this album with subject matter, sometimes even delivery or just overall being corny (Holy Grail, La Familia). Also every attempt at sounding socially conscious so far has sounded forced, and his over the top namedropping of Basquiat for example come off as desperate. So no, only clever lines don't make an album hot, but there are other parts where MCHG flat out fails.

Throughout the whole album Hov spoke on black success, the glorification of black family and black monogamous love, and the pressure of being a father after lacking a proper father figure in his life
Also speaks on his direct and ancestral past being the "waters" that allows him to sail on the boat of black success, speaks on the conflict of wealth and responsibility, selfish and selfless giving etc.

Jus say u dnt like Jay and be done with it..this album Beyond good...Jay tackled many things over great production..provided great energy with his delivery and mic presence on these tracks and an overall great experience

You left out the "route/root" double, as in "blood on the leaves and blood at the root"."on holiday(which is billie holiday last name, also he talking about the 4 of july) playing strange fruit(billie holiday song), if ima make it to a billi/billie i cant take the same route(he cant let them hang him)
