Horrible and I've debunked that myth already. You don't get a tan to look black. You get a tan because pale skin is associated with being sick, whereas tanned skin represents health and the allusion of wealth, as in you have money to vacation in the tropics.
There are a million shades of brown in between tan and brown. Maybe it's to look Mediterranean, or Latin but not to look "black".
AND A BIG FYI. Everyone can tan.
