Respectability politics and the distancing from what was deemed lower class uncouth behavior are some reasons. Plus, people were focused on showing and presenting our culture on the better parts, since white mainstream media focused on showing us in degraded positions.

I think it’s an untapped market though, only other movie I can remember that depicts 1930s Black Mississippi was Life. There are a lot of stories that can be told.
