being liked is more important than being competent at your job

for example, if it came down to it, the incompetent but well-liked co-worker is a lot more likely to be kept than the person who's great at their job but who no one really likes. I've seen it time & time again, the competent worker being let go for reasons while the incompetent morons continue to fail upwards because they are well-liked. I find that to be a shame. I've worked with a bunch of people who were great at their jobs but were introverts, kept to themselves and didn't engage in any extracurricular activities that either left or were let go. it just makes the work environment tougher when the people full of knowledge leave and you're stuck with morons who have no idea what they're doing job-wise but can hold conversations and make people laugh. I feel like it doubles my own workload :unimpressed:

I agree. I'm personally responsible for countless deaths and injuries do to being incompetent at my job... but people I work with like me because I make them laugh. It's kinda fukked up that they have allowed this to continue for as long as it has. Sometimes I think they purposefully put me in situations where they know I'll fukk up or maybe I'm just paranoid.

joking of course but i'm sure somewhere out there...:lolbron:

This has always been the case right from centuries, the idea of a merit based society and upward advancement into society being solely based on hard work and strong ethics is simply not true , forming those vital networks and cliques is crucial

Gotta take it, Race by race, case by case. It's a white lady at my job who apparently no one likes, is incompetent at her job but she's been here for almost 30 years and it's a Breh who does his thing doesn't trouble anyone and is a nice guy but he got the door over after getting into it with the white lady.

More like charisma will cover up shortcomings but not the other way around.

Being unlikeable AND bad at your job gets you fired. Being likable makes it harder for people to let you go because you're "good for morale" or "the customers love them" or "lets just try him in another role"

Depends on how much actual skills the job actually requires. My boy is a pompous a$$hole at his job but he’s an actual engineer so they gotta deal with it and he’s black

Guess what I’m saying is the scenario in the Op only works in white collar environments but in a blue collar environment that charisma and popularity don’t mean shyt

I think it is. Of course you can't be absolutely devoid of likeability or competence. You're 100% going to get fired. But I'd rather work with less competent people that I like on annoying subject matters, than work with unlikeable people that are perfect on something I like doing.

If your great at your job and everything is a fight because you "know" better, i'm not working with you

For context, I work as a software engineer

Likability not only matters in the office, it’s usually the only reason they let you in that mother fukker.

Merit based systems are rarely used nowadays. That shyt is ancient now.

Into this scenario applies much heavier tk the actual hiring process. I’ve witness people with more skillset/knowledge and less personality not get the job in favor of the person whose more charismatic

If you’re good at your job the world is your workplace and exponentially more options are available.

I’m in STEM and that means if I hate my job I can take what I learned, interview somewhere else and land it for much higher pay and/or work-life balance.

If you don’t bother improving/learning then your options are limited and you have to “be liked”. Switching workplaces will be difficult though: a knowledgeable interviewer can tell right away you’re nothing but a schmoozer.

When someone good at their job leaves many get sad but deep down people knew they were too good for the company. It’s better to be that person. If you’re good at what you do you can bring that everywhere with you,

Mostly true, but depends on the role. In general, you need to be likable and trustable(competent). But if you’re in a job that requires rare skills, you can lean more towards being competent and less on the likability.
