If you want to say that influence/tech has been shared all over the industry then that's fine. Sony has been "influenced" by both Nintendo and Microsoft in that sense, as have they been influenced by Sony.

Well yeah influences are industry wide. But seeing how closely Microsoft worked with Sega it's not a stretch for some to feel that Xbox was a spiritual successor to Dreamcast. What's wrong with that??

Sony worked closely with Nintendo before the ps1. Is the ps1 a "spiritual successor to snes"?

Not the same thing. Sony and Nintendo didn't go through with their Snes/PSX console. Sony ended up going their way and Nintendo theirs. The N64 and PSX were two completely different consoles in interface and control as well as hardware.

Idk man you seem bothered by the notion that the Xbox is seen as a upgraded Dreamcast as if that's a bad thing.
If someone said Kobe is basically a successor to Jordan does that stop him from being great?? Dreamcast was ahead of it's time. A better "dreamcast" is a good thing. I don't see the problem with that breh.

The only Microsoft franchise I've ever cared for was Gears of War...which is an all-time great, but not enough to trump Sega's contributions to the gaming community.

When you say gotta go that means the systems never existed...I couldn't imagine the gaming industry with Sega never existing. They failed ultimately as a company, but they provided me with more hours of enjoyment than Xbox ever did.

In fact, there is a deeper connection between Xbox and Sega that not many gamers are aware of. Peter Moore was the head of Sega’s American division when the Dreamcast’s life abruptly came to an end and Sega became a third party software publisher. He would then join Microsoft in 2003 as their Corporate Vice-President of Interactive Entertainment Business division.

While speaking to The Guardian about the Sega collapse Moore was quoted saying, “We had a tremendous 18 months. Dreamcast was on fire – we really thought that we could do it. But then we had a target from Japan that said we had to make x hundreds of millions of dollars by the holiday season and shift x millions of units of hardware, otherwise we just couldn’t sustain the business. So on January 31st 2001 we said Sega is leaving hardware. We were selling 50,000 units a day, then 60,000, then 100,000, but it was just not going to be enough to get the critical mass to take on the launch of PS2. Somehow I got to make that call, not the Japanese. I had to fire a lot of people; it was not a pleasant day.”

Another interesting revelation came from the folks behind ‘Did You Know Gaming?’ In a recent video, they revealed that Sega wanted the Xbox to play Dreamcast games. Another revelation was that Sega had collaborated with Microsoft during the development of the Dreamcast. Sega had reportedly supported Xbox from the start, and had even planned exclusive titles for the system. According to the Examiner, the Xbox-exclusive ‘Fable’ was originally supposed to be a Dreamcast title.

I mean Nintendo helped Develop the PSX and Sony helped develop the Nintendo 64. That also explains why Nintendo went with the cartridge format while SONY went with discs. Totally makes sense now!

Sega was one of the first major third-party publishers to back the Xbox, announcing an eleven game deal for the system during the 2001 Tokyo Game Show and becoming one of the biggest Japanese publishers to support the system. Many former Dreamcast games or sequels to popular franchises, including Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Sega GT 2002 (and Sega GT Online), Gunvalkyrie, Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller, The House of the Dead III and ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth were made exclusive to the Xbox console (although some have been re-released on other platforms since).

Many factors suggest the Xbox was Sega's preferred console during the first two or three years of the system's lifecycle. Sega Chihiro arcade hardware is derived from the Xbox, and much of Sega's early Xbox games are arguably more demanding in nature than their PlayStation 2 output (with a closer resemblence to that of the Sega Dreamcast's western library than the family-friendly selection of games given to the GameCube and the Japanese-centric games given to the PlayStation 2). By the middle of the decade, however, the playing field was leveled, with a stronger focus on multi-platform games over giving each system its own set of exclusive titles.

Much of the Xbox's design is influenced from the Sega Dreamcast, not just from a controller design perspective, but from the lessons Microsoft learned from the Windows CE operating system included in the Dreamcast's specifications. At one point the Xbox was even planned to be able to run Dreamcast games, with Isao Okawa, then-president of Sega, having several meetings with Microsoft founder Bill Gates over the subject. The deal inevitably fell through due to online issues - Dreamcast online support conflicting with Microsoft's plans for the Xbox Live service. The relationship between Sega and Microsoft remained very close at the time, with Sega of America's Peter Moore migrating to Microsoft in the years that followed.

But about this "plenty" of Nintendo games on Sony, show me them. I'm starving for games maybe I can get some Smash Bros or Mario Kart running on my PS Vita. :troll:

Consequently, when details of CD-ROM XA (which had neither of those problems) were released to the public, Nintendo was interested.[12][13] Simultaneously developed by Sony and Philips, CD-ROM/XA was an extension of the CD-ROM format that combines compressed audio, visual, and computer data, allowing all to be accessed simultaneously. Games like final fantasy, metal gear, yakuza, are synonymous with playstation consoles, sure they aren't all deved by Sony, but nobody lists nfl gameday as the reason they loved psx.

The major difference was that the sony/Nintendo deal fell flat, Nintendo didn't want to use their ideas, and didn't.

Sony then created their own system while Nintendo went in a completely different direction.


Sega and Microsoft worked closely together during the dream cast and xbox.
They never fell out and ideas were used.

The two situations were not the same.

How you selling 50,000-100,000 units a day over 18 months but only got 10 million sales :duck:

Split the difference at 75,000 units a day over 18 months thatd be 40 million sold, 4 times what they actually sold and theyd be in business still :heh:
