I think it was more of thinking about robots as computers, which they are technically. I would argue, it wasn't referring to online dating, but actually a robot/computer loving a person type shiit. If this is 1984, then Star Wars has made a massive impact on the movie watching culture, and a few other sci-fi type movies and TV shows and cartoons by that time.

It just happen to be that the phrase would 10 years later refer to people meeting online and 20 years later, the reverse original idea, of people now also having sex dolls .
