18 percent is a lot of people when you factor in the overall population
Not really, especially when you look further out. Nearly 70 million out of almost +380 million.
Its mostly concentrated in white, older men.

Of that 18% almost half live paycheck to paycheck. And most of those think they need more to be "rich".
"45% of Americans earning over $100k live paycheck-to-paycheck.

Despite the common belief that more money equates to more stability, many nearly half of all Americans making over $100k are struggling to pay the bills. In fact, the number of Americans earning over $100k who live paycheck-to-paycheck increased by seven percentage points between 2021-2022, from 38% to 45%.

82% of Americans making over $100k per year say they need to make at least $200k per year to consider themselves rich.

By contrast, 56% of Americans believe that making $100k per year would make them rich, highlighting the difference in mindset between poorer and wealthier citizens."

100K before Covid is now worth 126k

Folks stay losing ground even when they think they're getting ahead.

Value of $100,000 from 2019 to 2025

$100,000 in 2019 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $126,359.68 today, an increase of $26,359.68 over 6 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.98% per year between 2019 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 26.36%.

This means that today's prices are 1.26 times as high as average prices since 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index. A dollar today only buys 79.139% of what it could buy back then.

That’s one out of every 5 pretty much. That’s not bad.

:ehh:

$100k translates to roughly 115–120 IQ.

Average IQ in America is 98.
It's bad when you consider the distribution of income across ethnicities. Then it's even worse when you then consider the skewed wealth of the top 1% vs everyone else. Incomes haven't kept up with inflation. Everyone is hosed now compared to years ago. You can see it. In 2015 if a breh mads a thread telling young folks to stay home and stack their bread posters would tell them to move out, its not that bad out here. 10 years later most are saying stay home and stack that bread dont move out until youre ready. Overall economic climate is bad right now

I have posted what i make before and have others. This is a place where there are a lot of older people on here so i would not be surprised if the numbers are skewed a little from real world norms.

Even worse, we have a lot of posters from the north east and west coast on here further skewing salaries. salaries are inherently inflated in those environments and abnormal when compared to the rest of the country.

its not uncommon for a regular bus driver or garbage man in LA , DC, or NYC with only 3months of formal training to make 100k in those regions , whereas the exact same position and experience is lucky to make 50k in san antonio or St.Louis or Atlanta.

Even traditionally high earning jobs like software engineers or associates lawyers are capped at 90k-110k in the south east or the non-chicago midwest, while their peers in Seatle or Boston are starting at 150k+ .
