9/10

I loved it, I can see why some people might HATE it.

The cinematography, the symbolic visions, the neon lighting :ooh:

This dude represents the devil. And he DOES NOT FORGIVE. In his demented mind he gets to choose who lives who dies who must feel pain.

The mom represents a demented mother. It's pretty clear Ryan Gosling's character's family were all psychos, but he was still trying to be a good person and do the right thing. That's why his mom kept saying there's something off and different about him, from the womb.

I want to re-watch. :datazz:

saw it again before my 24 hr rental expired and with a second viewing i definitely enjoyed it more than the first time. i wasnt expecting the David Lynch type dream vs reality moments, Refn definitely uses visuals for dialogue throughout this picture. you are supposed to infer many things not uttered through his use of visual story telling. cinematography was gorgeous, and soundtrack (although not drive level great) was very neurotic. you literally felt like you were being dragged through this hell with all these demonic characters walking around. i feel the average moviegoer may not find this film appeasing but it is definitely a more artsy flick than drive was aspiring to be, but still not as good as drive. Felt like i was in a trance for 90 mins. Good ride though

gonna have to disagree wit u here and most ppl i think would too, he definitely represents "god" in this flick. He condemns the evil throughout the movie that tries to kill innocence or himself, or at the least punishes them for their actions. He DID forgive the one with the boy when the other guy snitched him out. He lets him live (they didnt show it in the film it just cut away after dude got sliced, but the script went into further detail on this scene). and i would go as far as say Julian's mother represented the Devil, and Julian was stuck in her web throughout all the years of evil he has done for her. Its why we kept seeing his hands always bloody and washing away that blood.
and then the ending is another example of his hands in the same metaphor but i dont want to spoil that for anyone.

I was always under the impression that when a human plays God it's devilish. I see what you guys are saying though. but extreme self righteousness isn't that what the whole mythos of the devil about?

Lucifer didn't like being a servant to God and took it upon himself to do what he felt was right to him.

You guys could be right though:ohhh:

Nicholas Refn you clever b*stard

On my re-watch, I think I've been fooled by the dialogue. When the older brother said "Time to meet the devil". And that Asian dude has possessed eyes.

Maybe compelled eyes from God, to execute justice. ::blessed::leostare:

Now that more people are seeing it, I want to know what people are thinking of the parent-child theme? In case you didn't notice it the first time around, the entire story is built around it (as well as a person taking responsibility for his own actions).

Billy asks the pimp if he has a daughter he can fukk. The pimp refuses and gets beaten, but by sticking up for his daughter he (unknowingly) saved her life.

Billy kills a prostitute and Chang allows her father to exact revenge on him. Chang then maims the father as punishment for not looking out for his daughter.

Crystal arrives to take revenge on her son's killer.

The attack on Chang was planned by two locals. One snitches on the other to get off. When Chang confronts the other, the man makes no excuses and just pleads that Chang will leave his son unharmed. Chang leaves both unharmed and kills the snitch.

When Gosling loses the fight to Chang, Crystal urges him to take Chang out. However, she told the other to kill both Chang and his daughter. Gosling protecting the daughter above the will of his own mother is what saves him in the end.

When Crystal is talking to the police, Chang deliberately waits in the hallway because he knows she'd change her tune if he was there. He hears her giving up her own son like it's nothing, and kills her.

He says even less this time around, lol. Kristin Scott Thomas probably has the most dialogue in the movie (she certainly has the most memorable dialogue).

Re-watching viewing Chang as God's vessel....That makes the tension and confrontation between Chang and Julian way more powerful. Chang empathizes with the fukked up situation Julian was born into, and how he still has loyalty to his demented mother.

The mom definitely sexually abused her oldest son, she literally had a moment of silence in thinking about the size of his dikk
:what:

That fight between Julian and Chang represents when a lost soul that is literally mad at the world. Chang recognizes that Julian isn't frightened at all, many depressed people aren't scared they just don't know what to do or where they are going.

And when you are mad at God and the world you will get your ass BEAT :manny:

:wtf:The look on the other officer's face when he asked Julian "Do you know WHO he is?"...and Julian nodded barely showing fear.
