It was...

... an incest thing. More specifically than an incest thing, it's an Oedipus Complex, which ties into the revelation that Julian killed his own father.

Either way, he's sexually repressed, which the movie blatantly shows when his hooker girlfriend ties his hands while she masturbates. The closest he comes to actually touching her is when he reaches inside her at one point. Which is also exactly what he does when he slices his mother so he can reach inside her.

Of course the sex thing goes both ways since Crystal shows a very unhealthy interest in Julian's body (the way she caresses him when they first meet, as well as the part where she reminisces about both her sons' dikk sizes).

Julian's part in the movie is pretty much about him overcoming the clutches of his love for his twisted mother.

that's what i thought...shyt was quite disturbing.

I don't get why critics hated this and loved Drive. The slow pacing, the violence, the long stretches without dialogue...both films follow the same formula IMO.

Drive had more mainstream appeal. OGF is a lot closer to "l' enfant terrible" type arthouse stuff, which always gets critics divided. While it gets compared with Drive the most because of the Gosling/Martinez connection (as well as most people just not being familiar with the rest of Refn's filmography at all), thematically and stylistically this movie borrows a lot more from Fear X and Valhalla Rising.

It follows perfectly in line of those movies but with a way stronger execution, which is why it's laughable to me this has been getting worse reviews.

What the fukk did I just watch? :mindblown:

Movie was fine and shot beautifully and I get Refn likes little dialogue and use visuals as the main tool for his storytelling but the plot ain't worth all the trouble imo :manny:

PFFFT I don't even know, man. I just finished watching it. I dont want to say that Chang was god but he was definitely an angel of some kind. Maybe an angel that deals with karma. I dont know but with the mood lighting, it definitely felt like Julian was living in his own hell. The mom though, wow. Was there some incest shyt going down there?

Looks like the director should just stick to cinematography.
Sounds like most of the people here (and you included, maybe) had problems with the story. That's not the directors problem. He can only do so much with the script he is given.

However, since the director actually wrote this movie...feel free to bash him :troll:

I liked it a lot.

This is a new fave of mine.

Haven't watched a Chinese underworld/crime movie in a while, and I loved it. I understand most critics will hate it since most people have been trained by Hollywood to only like certain kinds of films (I'm surprised Drive was a hit) .

If anybody wants to get more familiar with the directors work watch his early "pusher" trilogy about the drug world/streets Of Copenhagen.

My problem with the film was the pacing of it. Stylistically it was absolutely beautiful, however, the pacing of the film made it hard to sit through. I didn't have a problem with the story since it left room for subtle undertones in each character. The pacing tho.

The slow burn could be a little bit tedious at times. But it pays off in almost every scene that it's used.

If you didn't like the pacing here, stay away from Fear X and Valhalla Rising, lol. Unlike this one those movies don't even got satisfying pay-offs to all of the build-up.
