audiovisually well crafted, but otherwise a load of crap, not worth the money imo

Saw this last night, I loved the direction and the cinematography and the music was just stunning....when the three came together, it worked so well, the build up to the shootout, the scenes just after dawn with Chang and the sword, the way the hotel was shot, it was dope as fukk. The fight scene between Chang and Julian was ill too, when Jullian flipped on those two in the club, the red lighting and soft background of some the scenes....wow. But, the scenes with Gosling, his mother, and Mai, were almost unbearable, the oedipal themes were just over the top, gratuitous, overt and just odd, Kristin Thomas looked good for a women close to 50, but she played the role like a comic book villain, and I liked the first two karaoke scenes, but to end the movie on it? And not more gorgeous shots of Bangkok at night? Thought it stilted the ending and kinda undercut the movie, with a strong ending I would have liked it more. The torture scene was good conceptually, but I thought it kinda didn't pay off in the end, felt cartoonish. I was kind of reminded of 'Suspria' in some parts, felt like a beautiful, dread filled nightmare, but choppy scenes that didn't flow well, and the directors odd touches hurt it more then I could accept. 'Drive' was kind of a dark, dreamy urban fairy tale, this is a hellish, sweaty, red nightmare, but just not as compelling as 'Drive'. And I liked Goslings performance for the most part, the director did less with it then I would have liked. Need to grab that score/sdtk, Cliff Martinez is masterful at creating these dark, atmospheric, brooding scores.

Movie was alright.

The editing seemed off and the pacing was.. not good.. Wasn't really interested enough in any of the characters or storyline to really care about the "deeper meaning". The build up to the shoot out and fight were damn near perfect.. It's too bad the rest of the movie wasn't on par with those scenes.

One thing I don't understand the critics crying about the violence in the movie.. most of it was pretty tame. The scene they talked about the most (the torture scene) wasn't even the worst part IMO. I thought the scene where Chang slashes dudes ribs and then his body falls back and we see his ribs slashed open and blood spilling out was by far the worst as far as violence goes.

ppl wood kno what im talkin bout by saying aka drive2, i kno it aint drive 2, but most ppl dont kno the title bc of its lack of hype or advertisment

And those who don't know that will watch it expecting a film similar to Drive. Let the film live or die on its own.

I understand most critics will hate it since most people have been trained by Hollywood to only like certain kinds of films (I'm surprised Drive was a hit).

I've never understood this reasoning. Do you realize that most critics are EXTREMELY better-versed than 'most people' when it comes to discussing films. They're not trained to ONLY like any one sort of 'narrative-system', let alone 'ABC easy as 123' Hollywood films.

I generally don't really agree with critics with certain films...take Running Scared for instance...It didnt do well critically but NOONE can tell me that was a bad movie...,shyt was entertaining from start to finish...
