I can kind of see what the OPs trying to get at. This is something I can only see affecting recent (African) immiigrants though, so I don't know how much discussion it's going to spur.

I was born and spent most of my childhood in Africa. I lived around black people and rarely, if ever, saw any non-blacks. Because of this, I never really thought of myself as 'black'. I just thought of myself as myself, or my ethnicity (although even that was tough cuz i was an outcast with my own people).

When I moved to North America, it took a while for me to acclimatize to the whole racial dynamic over here.

And to answer you question OP: the first time, I realized I was black, was when people would be 'surprised' because I'd scored the highest in the class or when non-blacks would automatically assume I played basketball or listen to rap just because of my skin color. Also that time I was in the store, and the asian lady kept following me around. That and many other things. it all added up until my identity is right now, literally wrapped around my race. I can't think of myself, as not being black, because me not being black would be me not being me.

This is exactly what I was trying to say. Again being African especially in Africa, no one really says black. It only starts when we move abroad and when you hear that for the first time you are I guess surprised. And also, i guess we become black when we encounter people that are not black.

I mean we had whites around where i'm from but even they didn't use the word black. I guess it's confusing to non Africans. And no, not denying being black of cause.

Made me remember the Fresh Prince episode where little Carlton finds out

Little Carlton: I'm Black? :ohhh: :wtb:

Uncle Phil & Aunt Viv: :comeon: :snoop:

Nowhere near the same because Carlton was a c00n, i am not. All i am saying is we become black when we leave Africa.

The irony.

Sorry, but what irony? Why is ok to call someone Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Mexican et etc, but for black people it's just colour like we are all the same?

You just refered to the group who approached your mom as 'white'.

Then you wanna try and say calling a black person black isnt politically correct.

Thats called hypocrisy, friend

MY GOD! Because that is how THEY referred to themselves, i just didn't post the whole quote! They assumed we were black because of how European society has labeled people of African descent. Had they come to us and said African people then I would have been fine with it. I am not saying that i am not black or anything like that. I am just saying it's unfair that we are under one umbrella. Japanese, Chinese, Polish... black no matter where you are from.

The Forest Where Hope Died
When I was 8 years old, I was being bad acting a fool in the supermarket..some white man told my mom.."GET YOUR MUTT bytch!!!..I looked around and said "What mutt? I don't see a dog" and my mom said, "He's talking to you son" ..so she apologized to the white man for my actions and she grabbed my hand and we left the store.
