I think a lot of boys actually do want to better themselves, even the ones we often write-off as not wanting to. The problem is that they are so used to dealing with a world they feel doesn't care about them so they reject the fukk out of it. That or they saw themselves as being entirely and utterly unable to be a normal person, that is, a doctor or lawyer or anything like that. Some all they see is the problems in their lives and want a quick fix. Rap and so on provide not only a readily accessible avenue but one that comes across as glamorous. The allure is there and irresistible for a kid without guidance. It seems like a great idea to them. I saw a lot of this when I used to mentor. They need people to be straight with them and not lie to them about the world and about things and to actually take their issues and grievances and complaints seriously because all too often people wouldn't.
Yea, that shyt don't work. And it's celebrated so much and social media has given undeserved voice to worst of the worst of "the culture," that shaming them in public doesn't work either.
