Oregon Engineer Proved Right About Traffic Lights

"Mats Järlström's emotions were clearly visible Friday morning. After years of arguing red light traffic cameras are flawed, the official Journal of the Institute of Transportation Engineers said he was right," reports a local news station in Portland, Oregon:

The ITE sets traffic policy recommendations for the United States — and they said cities should be using his formula. "It is a big deal," Järlström told KOIN 6 News. "It's the top."

Six years ago he tried to tell the Beaverton City Council there's a problem with its red light cameras. Then there was the State of Oregon, which
fined him for practicing engineering without a license. He had to file a federal lawsuit to continue his research to prove drivers making turns at intersections often get caught in a dilemma when they're slowing down to make a turn and the yellow light isn't long enough.

Järlström said he used 8th-grade math skills to prove drivers have been getting tickets they can't avoid.

"It didn't take an engineering license to realize that the formula for traffic light timing was flawed," Järlström says on the Institute for Justice site. "I'm just glad that the ITE and the professional engineering community were willing to listen to an outsider, consider my work, and finally update their formula."

"The First Amendment protects Americans' right to speak regardless of whether they are right or wrong," said the Institute for Justice attorney who represented Järlström. "But in Mats's case, the ITE committee's decision suggests that he not only has a right to speak, but also, that he was right all along." The ITE's vote updates a 55-year-old equation, the site reports.

Järlström added, "We will never know how many Americans have received red light tickets for making perfectly safe right-hand

Great news/motivation for drivers to fight/appeal all traffic tickets
Also, you fawking able bodied pedestrians need to have consideration for drivers by jogging across the street, instead of the slow catwalk strut

When I'm in pedestrian mode, no matter if it's a stop sign OR red light, I jog across when I see a car waiting to proceed or turn

well now that depends on age, health, etc. some people are young with bad knees, bad feet, bad ankles, etc, etc. so they aint jogging unless they have to and if the green walking logo is up. they have the right to take as much time as possible to get across the street. they do not have to speed up for any cars. and they shouldnt have to. there is more than enough time for everyone to get where they need to go in 99.9% of the situations.

nah. If they had the "right to take as much time" then there would be no timer on traffic lights

Everybody do their part, then things usually work out well for all. Easily avoidable traffic problems occur when folks think their time and destination is more important than others

If you cant walk across an intersection in 35 seconds you shouldnt be outside walking
Also your comments reflect the impatience most drivers have and why most people don't have the temperment to operate vehicles and only a special class of citizens should be allowed to be drivers it is far too easy for people to get a license you literally have people who can't park with driver's licenses

this is something that bugs me that noone ever speaks about is the ability to practice certain professions is incredibly overregulated

as a chemical engineer, i could not lawfully design plans to be sent to a patent office because I lack the PE required by various state laws. Which means in essence unless I apprentice for 4 years and get certified my entire degree only qualifies me for jobs

Its sad that because of regulation, there are huge % of "skilled" professions that cannot solve problems for society unless they incur the costs of college + the lost costs of potential investment

In laymans terms, for a unique individual to actual solve problems in their community in "regulated" fields requires a net spend usually in excess of $100000 in training/experience.

Overseas engineering isn't as trapped due to costs. This is an unpopular opinion and to play devil's advocate reason for this here is that in the US there was a prevalence of engineers designing machines that killed people from the 1600 - 1800s

I think people need to relook at the solution that people chose and analyze the law from a 2020 perspective :francis:

impatience OR knowledge that no matter how slow a pedestrian walks, how reckless a pedestrian/cyclist maybe, and how unfair/inconsistant traffic laws are...it will always be the driver's fault
