As a person who moved around alot as a kid and went to many different schools. I can testify to the fact that some education systems are fundamentally setting you up for failure and others for success. If you have kids, do everything in your power to make sure they spend their entire academic career in a good school system.
People like to argue it starts and ends in the home. That aspect is true but greatly exaggerated. for example, my parents don't know how to speak spanish. so they can't really help me in a spanish outside of encouraging me to keep up with the assignments my teacher gives. well in one school i went to the teacher gave zero assignments. she just lectured "in english" about spanish history and had us memorize vocabulary words for quizzes. Another teacher gave assignments, did field trips and spoke to us in spanish more often than english. learned much more in her class.
