The same thing with why butter pecan ice cream, for many decades, especially during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights Eras, was the ice cream of the Black community.

Certain foods in the community that are popular are not just because of their taste, but also their historical background, which makes them cultural staples passed down from generations.

My only experience with pumpkin is a store bought piece at a potluck years ago

Pumpkin pie is trash. Sweet Potato is way better. I don’t even like regular potatoes as it’s too bland and starchy. I prefer sweet potato mash and fries as well.

Pumpkin Pie = anti-slavery, abolitionist, anti-Southern plantation owner

Sweet Potato Pie = pro Black, embracing the culture

Neither option is actually "bad."

As for the taste....Sweet potato pie is better by default, but you can get pumpkin pie REALLLLLL close if you know what you are doing with the spices/flavors and make a good homemade crust. If the pumpkin pie is trash, it's because you can't bake for shyt.

Pumpkin, apple, pecan and sweet potato. Gotta be able to do all four.

i prefer sweet potatoe/yams but the whole "african culinary tradition" thing is false because they eat both on the continent. any starchy or root vegetable really.
