I'd argue that it's the opposite. He's likable to us smarks because we respect his ring work and longevity

He's earned the right. Orton has been putting in work with only injury time off, putting on great matches for a decade and more. He is truly a top tier performer, an oldschool wrestler, and one of the few who does heel and babyface very well.

I actually think he has always shown an interest in that...dude put over mizark, christian, daniel bryan, MIZ, and now ambrose reigns and never flexed when doing jobs and always made his foe look good. I respect that
