Oscar Visual Effects Shortlist: Pacific Rim, Oblivion, The Hobbit, Gravity, But No Man of Steel

The Motion Picture Academy of Arts & Sciences has announced its short list for the films that will vie for the Best Visual Effects Oscar. A total of 10 films will compete in a vfx “bakeoff” in January, where select scenes from each movie are shown to the voting members. Among the short listed titles are Pacific Rim, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, World War Z, The Lone Ranger, Star Trek Into Darkness, and of course Gravity. Curiously, Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel failed to make the cut, as did Ender’s Game and The Wolverine. Though critics were mixed on Man of Steel and Ender’s Game, both films showcased some seriously excellent visual effects—especially Ender’s Game—so it’s surprising to see them left off this Oscar short list.

Actually, I agree with you there. Lone Ranger is Man of Steel status with the effects. Neither one belongs on this list. Gravity, The Hobbit, and Pacific Rim are the three real contenders imo.

I actually saw a grainy cam of Elysium, so I can't comment on how good the effects really were with certainty. From what I saw, though, it wasn't that impressive. I saw MoS in a theater, though.

I dont think it deserves to win an oscar for special effects but it definately deserves to be on that list over some some of those shytty movies.

Give it to rim or gravity. Both of those movies are essentially filmed on green screens.

Lone Ranger was a visual masterpiece. They took a white man and made him into a convincing Native American .
