Del wasn't necessarily the kingpin, he was the "clean" business man the cartel used to travel and look after the money. The feds even say this, that they couldn't touch him because he was clean. but he was high up enough the command chain that the hillbillies taking him out came off as the show wildly going for a shock/wtf end of season moment rather than a natural progression of the story
i mean, a random hillbillie family taking out a mexican cartel general? c'mon
also, Del was one of the better characters, dude was wild charismatic and stole all scenes he was in. shame he won't be around anymore
I also think that the show went too big on scale, i think if they had toned it down like instead of Marty dealing with "the 2nd largest cartel in mexico" and instead of having to launder hundreds of millions, they should have had Marty dealing with a "mexican crime family" and he should've been laundering no more than 10-15 millions, the show would've been better off and more believable. if they had toned it down, it woulda also made the potential incoming clash of the mexicans with the hillbillies more believable, like its easier for me to believe the hillbillies took out the uncle from a mexican family rather than someone with Del's position and power.
in that scenario, the casino enterprise would also be seen as both the mexican family and hillbillies investing the vast majority of their finances into expanding into "big time" and needing each other, and would add a dynamic of Marty having to micromanage the relationship for it to be successful since he was the trigger for casino idea.
Ionno, i just feel like the show woulda been smoother if they had gone with a smaller criminal scale.
