I just thought about this. Given the belts up for grabs and all of the sanctioning fees, these could be between 10-20 million themselves. That is ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if that is something that forces people to shy away from unification fights.

Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez has advised his former foe, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, to do everything in his power to avoid the possibility of allowing the unification with WBC/WBA champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. to go to the scorecards. The fight is taking place on May 2nd from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Marquez saw his countryman, Jose Luis Castillo, as the rightful winner over Mayweather in 2002 when they fought at the MGM Grand. The judges saw it otherwise, and scored the bout unanimously for Mayweather.

The Mexican veteran, who fought Pacquiao four times and Mayweather once, feels the Filipino boxer must avoid any boxing strategy and come in there throwing firepower with both hands

Scully: Pacquiao Will Be A lot Meaner With Mayweather

Former fighter and veteran trainer John Scully is picking Floyd Mayweather Jr. to win a twelve round decision over Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Even with his pick going against the Filipino star, Scully sees Pacquiao as being at his most dangerous when he steps in the ring with Mayweather.

Once Pacquiao falls behind on the cards or starts getting picked off with punches, Scully says the killer instinct will come out of him.

"I think if you see Pacquiao getting hit with shots or if he’s behind on the scorecards and they tell him he needs a knockout to win, I think the killer instinct would be very prevalent, it would be very much there," Scully told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.


"I’m sure he’s gonna be meaner than he’s ever been. Both guys know that this fight is all about, they know the ramifications of winning and losing it. Manny, winning by knockout over Floyd Mayweather would be unbelievable for his career and it would basically be one of the greatest victories of all time. I’m sure that whatever each guy has left, I’m sure they’re gonna bring every bit of it to the date."

I think more than anyone else in this world, Marquez is holding close those 4 four fights because if Floyd blows Manny out, it diminishes him as well. I think Dinamita is very cognizant of that fact too. Those fights are his legacy and his legacy takes a hit if there is domination by Floyd

On that note (talking about domination by Floyd) I was reading Doug Fischer's mailbag today and in regards to someone saying Floyd is gonna dominate Manny, he says this:

He might. He’s the favorite to do so, but to think of him as untouchable and to think of Pacquiao as a one-armed bandit is gross oversimplification of both fighters and this matchup in my opinion.

Maybe it’s good to keep the analysis of this as simple as you have: Floyd takes away Manny’s left hand. Fight’s over. Floyd wins. Sometimes boxing is that simple. But I don’t think this particular matchup of future hall of famers is that simple.

Pacquiao has more than big left cross and there’s a lot more for his opponents to worry about than his power. He’s still got his speed and reflexes. He’s got his footwork, which still beautifully sets up his offense and takes him out of the danger zone after he’s done his damage. He’s got a good jab, the one punch that Mayweather’s opponents can land with regularity. He’s got head and upper-body movement and makes good use of feints. He counter punches and puts his shots together well. Oh, and he’s a southpaw.

In other words, Pacquiao is a handful – even for Mayweather.

I know you’re going to say “So what? That’s Brandon Rios he’s countering and outmaneuvering in the first example. Floyd’s on another level. True. But Pacquiao’s on another level from Maidana and Canelo.

I’m not saying that Mayweather is going to be overwhelmed and run over by the Filipino icon’s unique style and “signature techniques.” His style is just as difficult for Pacquiao as the underdog’s style is for him. I see a competitive (hopefully compelling) fight that goes the distance.

I agree that we can expect the best versions of Mayweather and Pacquiao possible on May 2. I agree that, despite his KO loss to Marquez, Pacquiao has been on an amazing run and, for the most part has operated on an elite level.

However, I think you’re overlooking the severity of his knockout loss. Pacquiao was KTFO. Cold. Face down on the canvas and he was out of it for several minutes. It’s very possible that Pacquiao suffered a severe concussion in that fight, and few boxers – if any – come back all the way from a knockout as devastating as that one.

I also think you’re overlooking Pacquiao’s subtle but gradual slide in 2011 and 2012.

Having said that, I was one of the many skeptics that thought he was finished as an elite boxer after the Marquez bout, and I can admit that was wrong about that (I picked Bradley to beat him legitimately in their rematch and I thought Algieri would give him fits when that fight was first made). Pacquiao has rebounded as well as one can since December 2012, and I think that’s as much proof as any of his past accomplishments that he’s a very special boxer.

Still, I have a hard time envisioning Pacquiao stopping Mayweather in five rounds. I can see him stunning or rocking Mayweather in the early rounds. I can even see him score a knockdown during the first half of the fight. But I don’t see Mayweather giving up or being totally bewildered by a fast start from Pacquiao. I think he’ll keep his composure and tie Pacquiao up if he gets hurt. I can even see him resort to dirty tactics if he needs to in order to buy enough time to recover and survive the round.

I think fans are getting a distance fight on May 2.

Surprisingly composed and measured from Doug, he hates Floyd to the bones. Distance fight favors Floyd. Great info breh.

I do have to add that in speaking of Bradley, if he hadn't gone right hand happy, he would have stood a better change. He has no real KO power and he was swinging for the fences.
