Im saying that it isnt Muslim or South Asia culture that promotes this because I was fine traveling in a largely Muslim country. This isnt normal, common, promoted, encouraged or accepted. However, Pakistan is definitely more conservative than the rest of South Asia, so your personal experience wherever else you were on vacation would not exactly be as applicable in Pakistan. I guess, that's sort of the point I was trying to make by citing the Peshawar example - after all it is the major urban centre, of an ethnicity that makes up 20% of the population of Pakistan.

I agree that Pakistan is more conservative, especially in the smaller cities. I've seen some nice party pics from Islamabad though.

The poor aren't also as hardcore in their beliefs - it's the middle class which is pretty religious and reactionary.
