I think you are thinking about respect in the wrong sense here. In this case he means respect in the sense of respecting an animal such as a lion or great white. If you have common sense you don't put yourself in a position to get attacked by putting yourself in their environment. This is making people "respect" them in the sense that if you do or say anything negative about them there is a possibility you will get handled. Maybe its not the best word to use but you could easily argue that not messing with ouija boards is out of "respect" for the evil that could find its way to you.
