I've experienced the phenomenon myself when I'm abroad. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it per se, I just view it as people in every country have hobbies. While some people are fixated on inanimate objects like games or films or sports , others are fascinated by foreign cultures and foreign people.
I know it's often spoken of as a parasitic relationship online (and believe me it can get there with your crazy ones) , but I think it's symbiotic most of the time.
