Rapper Mase Hit With $12K Federal Tax Lien
Rapper Mase, whose real name is Mason Durell, is now facing a federal tax lien after failing to pay $12,036.51 in taxes for the year 2010. The tax lien represents just the latest financial issue faced by the rapper since last year.
Mase was ordered to pay $7,500 in a default judgement when he blew off a lawsuit filed by a model who claimed that Mase had used her photo in publicity for his single “Why Can’t We.” He also went through a divorce last year after being married for 13 years; the divorce left Mase paying his ex-wife $6,000 in child support and alimony.
In this latest financial setback, Georgia court records show that the IRS plans to seize his assets and property if he does not pay the $12,035.51 in the specified time period. The IRS website defines a federal tax lien as the government’s legal claim against a person’s property when they neglect or fail to pay a tax debt. The lien is meant to protect the government’s interest in a person’s property, including real estate, personal property and financial assets. The lien is only put in place after a person fails to or refuses to pay an IRS debt in a timely manner.
Mase is not the only entertainer or celebrity to face tax issues with the IRS. Lauryn Hill, Flava Flav, Lil’ Kim, Lionel Richie, Toni Braxton, Lil Wayne and Bow Wow are just a few entertainers who have had their share of problems with the IRS. The IRS does not show them any preferential treatment and will auction off their property or belongings the same way they would the average taxpayer. Hopefully Mase will have a better year financially, and he can put these financial setbacks behind him.
