They have the best player in the league and a nikka who was an MVP candidate last year as his robin. I've been saying this since the trade happened.
Kawhi isn't the best player in the NBA and never really has been...
He got the benefit of the doubt to start the season, because of his playoff run. Neither Durant or LeBron were healthy and Kawhi has never looked like a superior player to either when they've both been healthy....
LeBron is healthy again, and in Year 17, while he does look inferior to the best versions of LeBron you've ever seen,
he does not look inferior to Kawhi Leonard right now. We're approaching 15% of the way thru the season, still enough time for things to change the rest of the way, but once again, even while being significantly older, at bare minimum LeBron looks equal to Kawhi, and you can make the argument he looks better, as Bron still hasn't rounded into his best form yet...
Cats are hoping Father Time appears to weaken Bron at some point lol...
I should also mention Giannis----->I gave Kawhi the benefit of the doubt because I saw him outplay Giannis head to head in the postseason last year. To be fair, Giannis is kinda on Harden status, he has to be what he is now, come later playoff rounds, or else his candidacy for best player always has an asterisk---->great regular season player, shaky postseason guy....
But watching Giannis, almost 15% thru the year, are you really telling me Kawhi looks better than him right now?
Kawhi is in the conversation, as he's been for a few years now, but it's clear when other guys are healthy, Kawhi is not separating himself as better than those other guys. He's Top 5, but I think we've seen his peak. It's not even close to the peaks Durant or Bron have shown us, and I don't think we've seen peak Giannis yet, and I'll at least give Kawhi that he outplayed dude head to head, but it certainly doesn't look like Kawhi is a better player than dude...
And for the record, when I say we've seen Kawhi peak, I'm not saying I don't think he can hit that peak again. I think he can. But I don't think his ceiling is higher than we've already seen...
Paul George is arguably the best #2 in the NBA, which gives Kawhi a distinct advantage. I'm not positive that holds, but regardless of whether Kawhi or PG is a #2, they are right there with an advantage as arguably the best #2 in the NBA. I agree with you there..
The gap between Kawhi and PG is smaller than ya'll think
This is a fact, and has been their whole careers. I said back in summer, I think PG will defer to Kawhi, and probably should, but player to player, I'm not sure he's really lesser than Kawhi....
The difference is I've seen George melt down in the playoffs, and similar to Giannis, he has to prove otherwise. Kawhi's playoff history are why we think, for the most part, he's better than George...
I think the Lakers are still right there with them but I think the Clippers can handle an injury or two better than the Lakers, who will need to be at full strength and firing on all cylinders. Normally I'd say let's see how they look after the trade deadline but the Lakers don't have any notable moves to make other than picking up the corpse of Iggy.
This is all fair, but George has to prove he can stand up to pressure playoff moments. He hasn't proven that..
•last year in a 5-game loss to Portland, PG shot .436/.319, with more turnovers than assists, got the series clinching shot splashed in his face, and had 8/24, 3/16, and 8/21 shooting nights. He played well in G5 but had a bad series overall...
•versus a 6-gane series with Utah in '18, he shot .408 from the field, more turnovers than assists, repeatedly git worked by Joe Ingles, and posted games shooting 6/21, 7/16, 9/21, and 2/16 in the elimination game 6. There's a pattern going on here...
•versus the Cavs in '17, Pacers got swept. In the final two games they lost by a combined 9 points, PG went 15-49 from the floor, shot .386 for the series, 5/21 in the elimination G4, and was repeatedly worked by Bron. They lost the last two games by 9 points, it isn't a stretch to say that if he plays better, they win at least a game, though his team wasn't good enough to win the series...
We can stop there, there's a history with Paul George, who is similar to Harden status. Great regular season guy, but repeated playoff disappearances. The only thing saving Giannis from Harden/George place completely right now is there isn't repeated meltdowns yet, but PG has a history....
So is he gonna be at his best when the moments call for it? This is a legitimate question to ask and the fact that people ask this question of other guys and skip PG only corroborates that there is a media bias to hype the Clippers this year....
All that said, Clippers are gonna win 59-61 games and finish with a Top 2 seed. They will probably finish higher seeded than the Lakers, probably win 3/4 games vs Lakers this year...
They need to make a move though and as currently constructed, their roster can be had come playoff time, and not just by the Lakers....
