Maybe he was counting on it.
Of course, his main goal was to get to the championship. But in his attempt to reach that goal, he was making himself eligible for all-NBA as a side-effect and whatever other bonuses are in his contract. I'm pretty sure there's a "O-ring blowout type" bonus for winning the Eastern conference or Championship that he won't be getting.

Aw man, that $7 million bonus is going up in smoke. 10% to agent. 45% to federal and state tax. That leaves like less than $3.5 million that this (pretty attractive) ex-scripper is going to drain as much as she can.

Dame got two more years on his contract so yeah he got a high chance of getting it too. Same with Anthony Davis. Kyrie could get it for his contract next year if he starts in the ASG again.
