The children reportedly called 911 after hearing the gunshot in the home, and officers found their father Shawn Christian Watson dead at the scene by the time officers arrived, according to Al.com, WDHN, and WTVY.
Watson was 38 years old, according to the outlets, who reported that his wife Annie Huffstutler was arrested and charged with his murder.
Dale County Jail records reviewed by PEOPLE show Huffstutler, 42, is being held without bond on a murder charge. Huffstutler was taken into custody shortly after 6 a.m. local time on Saturday morning.
WDHN reported that the shooting occurred around 2 a.m. local time. Watson was found dead in his bed, the outlet reported, citing information shared by Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum.
PEOPLE has reached out the Dale County Sheriff’s Office for more information but did not hear back on Monday.
“We believe there were five children in the home when the shooting happened, but none of them witnessed the alleged crime,” Sheriff Bynum told WTVY.
Al.com reported that the children heard the shots, however, and called 911 soon afterwards.
“This is a tragic event for this family and for all those affected by such a senseless act,” Bynum told the outlet. “Our prayers and full support are with them as they begin the difficult journey of healing and navigating life after this heartbreaking loss.
