Hay guys im planning to apply to my local community college I plan on going for a year than transfer. Problem is I dont understand the finacial aid process. I want to apply for fafsa in febuary but I have to pay tuition in may so how does this work. I read it takes 2 weeks to process the fafsa so when do I get the money to pay and do I apply to the college before or after I fill out the fafsa.
So anydvice or help would be appreciated thank you.
Also the pell grant should cover all of the costs .

you can file your fafsa now if you have the relevant information and still be set for this semesterI would imagine. also see if your state offers state assistance as well. fafsa has a website so you can do it all online. I would also imagine your college is open this summer so in theory you could go there and have someone help you with the process. In the event you do pay out of pocket schools often have payment plans so you can break it up over your semester. fafsa is directly applied to the cost of your credits. extra money if you're rewarded it usually come a few weeks to a month after school starts. hope that helps.

I encourage everyone than can afford to go to college to do so.... here's my opinion.

You should only go to college if.....

1)You can get a full ride whether academically or through sports(I don't knock either one, it's free)
2)You or your parents can foot the bill for the entire cost of your education without loans from a good school
3)Your smart enough to maintain a 3.0(normal scale)-5.0(honors)GPA. Anywhere from 3.4+ is a golden ticket in most majors.
4)If your major is a STEM major. If you can't do STEM then the school choice becomes more important. Ivy grads can pick up interviews just by having an Ivy degree.

other than that... It isn't worth going into debt for....

Eh, I think it depends, smaller loans can be worthwhile sometimes, it just depends.

Taking out something on the lower end like 10-15k for a BA at a decent school is probably worth it, but you definitely don't want to go to a private university paying 30k/year for a degree in Art. IMO it's a little unrealistic to expect that everybody will be a STEM major, Ivy Leaguer, or get a full ride. But I do think that you should avoid taking out more than 15k in loans unless you're a STEM major.

What I do think is important is going to a public school in-state (unless you have a full ride or rich parents), having an actual plan for what to do with your degree, and networking while you're there (this is one I wish I'd done more of).

I plan on applying next year feburary 2015 because I have some things to handle so I apply for the fafsa the same year I think I will attend the college. So if I applied now u would have to go to school in 2014 is that right?

Gang violence...
i cant even remember how everything went, but i suspect this will help...

1. apply for college first
2. apply for fafsa second (and by second i mean as soon as you are accepted by a school)
3. you never pay back grants
4. borrow as little as possible
5. prefer subsidized loans

why would you ask the coli and not the entire office dedicated to offices like this that I KNOW your college has :beli:

Breh, youre completly right, dont get me wrong.

But this place can be a haven for a young black man that wants to make something of himself. The coli is a very important social network for a lot of us. Sometimes u just want to talk to someone u know is looking out for you even if it is anonomous online. The people who work for a scool are looking out for themself and that school first and foremost.

I would work through your colleges financial aid office. Where you can get grants and scholarships over loans...always. There's always free money out there.

Also makes sure if you're transfering to a state school after going to community college that you know ahead of time what is transferable. on this again talk to your school.

Do both. The early the better when it comes to financial aid, scholarships, and grants.

Apply for as much scholarships as possible.
