The preview embargo lifted just now.

“As a showcase for the PS5 hardware, Returnal looks good with lots of effects going off, but its most impressive PS5 features lie with its implementation of the DualSense controller and 3D audio. The DualSense is put to particularly good use within the two biomes working with different gameplay mechanics and the environment. While playing, you’ll feel every step, the pull of the trigger and the impact of an enemy’s attack. Environmentally, you’ll feel things like the raindrops as they hit Selene’s suit.”

“Equally remarkable is the use of the PS5’s Tempest Engine for 3D audio. The world of Atropos comes alive, allowing players to absorb the different sounds of the biomes, whether it be the downpour in the Ruins or wind in the Wastes. It can even save your life by helping you detect the direction enemies are coming from. You’ll want a 3D audio-compatible headset for Returnal.”

Kotaku:

When you fire up Returnal for the first time, the game gives you a warning: if you want to save your current run, put the console into Rest mode.

“When you die or close Returnal you will always be returned to the crash site, and all non-permanent progression will be lost,” Housemarque’s 3D bullet-hell-esque shooter warns. “You can suspend your cycle by using the console’s rest mode functionality.”

“But I will say this: Returnal is absolutely my shyt. Housemarque knows how to make fast, slick, crisp games that look good and handle well. Now, they’ve made basically a creepy Risk of Rain that looks gorgeous as all hell on the PS5. That’s a win in my book.“

“Selene also has a highly enjoyable arsenal of weapons to play with. They feel great to shoot with, and at first appear to be fairly standard guns; a semi-automatic pistol, carbine rifle, shotgun and so on. But it’s the alternate fire options on them that really make them fun. These range from shield bursting beams to homing rockets that, despite being on a short cooldown, really take Returnal’s combat to the next level. They’re also the best use of the PS5 DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers that I’ve experienced yet, with a soft push of L2 allowing you to aim-down-sights, but a full press of the trigger activating your alt-fire option.“

Returnal’s DualSense and 3D Audio Use

“As one of the first true PS5 exclusives out there, Returnal makes some fun, immersive use of the new system’s features right from the jump. The DualSense has been a cornerstone of Sony’s next-gen push, and the crackle of lightning in Atropos’ sky, or the rumble of an asteroid down the left side of the controller during Returnal’s opening cutscene elevates a traditionally more passive experience. And if you have the opportunity, play Returnal from the start with 3D-compatible headphones. Not only do the sounds of the aforementioned asteroid, and Selene’s ship, move around you to mimic their on-screen location, one of Housemarque’s most nifty audio tricks is actually in the menus. As the rain of Atropos falls around Selene, click into her databank menu, and suddenly the downpour sounds more muted, mimicking the tap of rain against her helmet. It’s oddly soothing, and that’s something you might need amongst Returnal’s more intense combat. - Jonathon Dornbush

“After 10 hours with Returnal, I can safely say that this will be one of the best games of 2021. I am saying this as a long-time player and developer. Play this with good headphones (3D audio is amazing) and a TV with quality HDR - it is a magical experience when you combine all this with DualSense implementation. Controlling Selene and the feeling of movement is something else. The good news is that the end-user will play an even better version of this masterpiece.”
