Cars hold different value to depends on their lifestyle and area. A lot of time our circles and jobs influence us to get a nice car or to look success. Especially if you're in sales. A real estate agent has to look like they sell a lot of homes.

I know in the military you have people with the same rank and pay trying desperately to stunt on each other.

Certain cars can help you network and get you into different circles. I'm not going to lie, I bought my first Audi A6 in 2009. People treated my differently. A lot better. Just more respect and love. Bought an A8L with the sports package in 2013. Whew. When people see you pull up it's auto respect. Especially if you're fly too. You just have to assume things are going well for the person.
Unless you bought it cash you're paying interest on an item that goes down in value and has a maintenance cost to it. It's a triple whammy and if you've overextended yourself financially to get it then it won't take too long to become apparent. As time goes on the strain increases as it's an expensive item you're literally destroying over ownership by simply using it.

I get wanting to have a nice car but they just drain money. It's too expensive an item to play with like that. If someone pulls up in a 2018 Camry they aren't really gonna be judged. That's just a normal car.

Cars are a trap. Many people borrow money they don't have to get them and make 6 years of payments. The interest rate and contact length vs depreciation have the car go underwater with negative equity.

After some years you're gonna need work done. When that comes up it's likely ignored until it becomes an issue. At that point it's trade in a car you still owe on that isn't worth what you owe rather than fix it.

If people want to stunt get jewelry, nice clothes. Stunt with things that don't have a maintenance cost in the thousands on them. Cars aren't the thing to stunt with and again nobody that can actually afford your car is impressed by it.

Anybody driving around in a $50K car that can't afford a $3K repair out of pocket is a damn fool.
Cars are a necessity for a lot of people to get around though

not having car debt 8 out of the last 12 years is probably the number 1 reason why I have been able to save and invest prolifically for the better part of a decade. I could buy most any car in cash at this point, and I will happily continue driving my 10 and 11 year old paid off joints.
