M.I.A. (From Fader magazine): "I worked on it with Wesley [Pentz, aka Diplo]. I think 'Paper Planes' is Wes' idea, and Dave [Taylor, aka M.I.A.'s collaborator Switch] worked on it. We worked on it in London to get the sound of it right. But the idea was Wes', with the Clash 'Straight To Hell' sample. [As far as the vocals], that's how I sing. Most the time when I go into the studio to sing, I get really bored. If I'm going to sing then I'm going to have to sing a bit weird. But with that one I just woke up and just sang the whole song in one go. It was in the morning and I wasn't thinking too much. I hadn't brushed my teeth.[The sample of the gun reloading and then the cash register ringing] was a joke. I was having this stupid visa problem and I didn't know what it was, aside from them thinking that I might to fly a plane into the Trade Center - which is the only reason that they would put me through this. I actually recorded that in Brooklyn, in Bed-Stuy. I was thinking about living there, waking up every morning - it's such an African neighborhood. I was going to get patties at my local and just thinking that really the worst thing that anyone can say [to someone these days] is some s--t like: 'What I wanna do is come and get your money.' People don't really feel like immigrants or refugees contribute to culture in any way. That they're just leeches that suck from whatever. So in the song I say 'All I wanna do is [sound of gun shooting and reloading, cash register opening] and take your money.' I did it in sound effects. It's up to you how you want to interpret. America is so obsessed with money, I'm sure they'll get it."

That's a lie.

Diplo stated in a magazine interview that the song was mocking black/"hip hop" culture. Then mia started making this false narrative about how revolutionary it was after it started to get bigger.

The cash register sound effects are there to cover up the real lyrics which are taken from wreckx-n-effect's rump shaker "All i wanna do is zooma zoom zoom zoom in the pum pum". They couldn't clear the vocal so they covered it with samples. The original version was on the net back then but now it's gone

I trust you as a poster so I'll have to take your word for it. I legit can't find any information on it. Just Diplo about how she didn't care about music until Paper Planes blew up her album Maya. Shes was just going to get married and call it a day.

:patrice:

Damn, I think your right :obama:

EDIT: However incoherent the reason, the chorus of “Paper Planes” is contagious. “I never thought the song was political,” Diplo told me. “Mostly, Maya was making fun of American rapper culture. ‘Paper Planes’ was making fun of being what American kids are into, of being ‘gangsta.’ ”

Eh.

I think MIA has been around enough that she's earned the benefit of the doubt.

If she wanted to highlight the problems Muslims have around the world, she probably could have found a better way to express her point.

But this is an era where keyboard activists pounce the second someone says something they don't like. And right away you're deemed a racist or misogynist or whatever.

I hope she didn't intentionally set out to discredit BLM because if she did, she does deserve a lot of shyt for it.

One of the most reasonable posts in the thread.

Like other posters said. What's keeping her from starting that shyt then.

M. I. A need to get them "Muslim lives matter" t shirts printed up asap, they ain't gone make themselves.

I was looking at the pics from last year and some brehs were dressed up like characters straight out of an anime. Loads of them looked :wrist: as well.

I know it's all about the music but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be distracted by all the fukkery.
