I worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant for about four or five months, and this is 100% correct. 90% of the people in there have this oblivious attitude about the work they're doing, like we were up in that mufukka curing cancer or something.
Methinks yall just present yourself as easy targets to get styled on

Ive eaten at restaurants around the world... have friends in the industry... no problems

The waiter explaining your "special rate" in front of your friends that you brought to the establishment is just being polite and not gouging you something serious. I worked in the restaurant scene for way too long. I don't know if I'd say people are generally stuck up, moreso just generally pissed off, about work, about life, etc. 
shytty ass work environment especially if you're boss sucks at life. Use to work at a dude's restaurant who prior to working there I would've considered a good friend. I used to pull that fat fukks weight around basically holding the fort down with one other person, open to close 6 days a week while he sat in one at one of the booths in the restaurant spending his time on youtube, facebook and positing arguments to me from said booth about the arbitrary bullshyt conversations being had by

on 1st and 10 on the TV in the restaurant. Dude did not do one fukking thing good for his business, acts lewd and abrasive towards and in front of his customers and then had the audicity to talk shyt, tell others how to properly act and call co-workers out on a lack of work effort. The biggest sociapath/ego induced/ bipolar individual I have ever been around.
