People say hiphop peaked in the 90s... I have a hard time following that logic...

For me, and I'm sure you'll disagree with this because you normally disagree with everyone in these threads you make breh, but the music at that point built on what came before it when it came to beats and rhymes and changed the sound of pop culture instead of letting pop culture dictate how it should sound. Not to say everyone followed that blueprint, a lot of cats didn't but most of those that did didn't stay around long and the game got rid of them.

As far as lyrics go, there's a potency about that time because to get respect as an MC, you had to be nice and most of the dudes who were on at the time, not all but most, grew up battling, and when you battle you HAVE to be sharp or you're finished. It was all about who was the illest, that's how you got your rep, so the MCs who got on reflected that to a degree because that competitive nature was always in the music. It wasn't about "lets all just be friends" dudes wanted to be better than the next man and still make their money and you had guys who weren't BIG stars making lots of money but they focused on just being the dopest. Creatively, those artists were doing things that hadn't been done before in terms of song making: BIG making a song about suicide, Geto Boys making a song about psychological problems, etc. And the flows were all over the map because you could go from Bone to Wu to Tribe to Scarface to 8Ball and MJG to Outkast to Redman and the Hit Squad and no one sounded the same.

And as far as beats go, that's all personal taste, much like all of this, but for me, those beats just speak to me more. I know you feel like the ultimate point of music is to have fun and party and that works for you but for me, the ultimate point is just to speak to me on a visceral level and inspire some kind of emotion and if I put on a RZA beat or an Easy Mo Bee beat or an old Pete Rock or Primo joint from that era, it does the job every time. No beat has made me lose my shyt more than Still Shinin by Havoc and that's not a dance track by any means, it just works more for me and what I want from my music.

I don't think anyone would argue that the music was at its commercial peak during that time but creatively, there was something for everyone and it was all being done successfully. You don't like Wu because they're too grimy? ok cool, listen to Busta. You don't like BIG because you think he's too flashy? Cool, listen to Pac who can give you a bit of everything. You want something more laid back? Here's Snoop and Warren G. It's not an argument you'll ever buy into because you don't want to and it's not your thing and that's cool breh you're entitled to that, but most people feel that way for a reason and it's either something you get or you don't

That was good music, but music is so much more fun now.

This is the ultimate era to party in as far as hiphop goes.

No songs were not more lyrical? There's just as much lyrical stuff out now as it was back then.

Flows have never been better
Bro theres been like.. 2 exceptional albums in the last few years.

Just because hip hop these days has crazy potential (mostly due to advancement in production techniques), doesnt mean you can preemptively talk about the greatness of the era. not much has actually happened so far

I mean the hope is that albums from this era are talked about the same way as past eras but cats don't let albums marinate anymore. With everything being digital it's hard to really sit with it and let the impact be felt. Every impact album from the 90s became that way over time

This guy really has resentment for the 90s..I've never seen anyone jealous of an era before..lol

That shyt is weird right? That would be like any hip hop head worth his salt shytting on the 80s or trying to rewrite history. The 90s happened, it was a dope era for the music, celebrate it
