When you seek to sell a product, you should understand your market. She entered this space ill-prepared. When informed of that fact, she chose to remain in what she believed was blissful ignorance. The result? Triple plastic.

No one is obligated to support your product—in this case, her music—and no one is required to embrace your culture when you enter their country. Just as a Black American visiting South Africa would need to respect local customs to thrive, she must do the same here if she hopes to succeed in a genre like R&B.

Who buys music though when it’s free? Thats the real issue. How many albums does the average person buy per year now?
:patrice:
Back in the 90’s, you might buy 5-10 per year. 2025, I don’t even know how to buy music. Never bought anything on apple. I haven’t downloaded anything since Zune
:flabbynsick:
Unless you are truly passionate about an artist and want to support them, you ain’t buying shyt.

Plus artists aren’t making money off sales anyway. Go see your artists live if you really want to support them. That’s money directly in their pockets.

Nah. I don’t listen to her music. But people going out of their way to shyt on her because she says she’s coloured is comical.

You can’t apply cultural rules to black people that don’t come from this country. Expecting or thinking black people all over the world go through the same shyt as black Americans is arrogant and ignorant. Even on this country, black culture in the south is different than the west coast, east coast or Midwest. The slang is different, and customs are all aligned.

So to get mad an someone who isn’t from the U.S. over some shyt you not even up on is crazy.

don't think this was the only thing. she committed a number of faux pas.

but people turning this into a diaspora war is some bottom barrell shyt.

my only criticism of her music is, much like afrobeats, it's vibe dependent. it's only good when you're feeling good. but once you come off those poison poppies, you trying to hear some real shyt.

You sound like you’re repeating what everyone else said. Explain this “market”

What exactly is she catering to in the United States? What’s the comp? What “customs” are they supposed to adhere to when it comes to R&B?

Say something original and maybe I will take you seriously.

It’s funny going back to look at the chart position of artists I grew up on. A lot of these people didn’t go number 1 but they had major support. I know somebody might challenge me on this but you guys are missing a good top 10 countdown show for radio and tv. There’s literally good r&b out here but nobody is exposed to it so people think otherwise. Too bad XM radio ain’t free cause they play everybody :yeshrug: Too many people expect artist to debut and stay number 1 now.. I can only imagine how it would look if we expected every single artists back then to debut and stay number 1 or some shyt.

Apple Music, Spotify, there’s a ton of dope American R&B that nobody consumes. You got all of these podcasts that don’t even talk about nothing but gossip.

She needs to fire her team,go away for a while, see more of the world and realize that her core market isn't the US and act accordingly. The end all of music globally isn't just the US anymore and if you reach for longevity instead of running from viral moment to moment and not pander to each and every group waiting to be insulted she can have a long career. Her cosplaying as a black American girl while shytting on their cultural holy houses is what made people go hard on her. So go away, get popping somewhere else and watch...

I don’t even think South Africans bump tyla much. Zee nxumalo, nkosazana daughter, shandesh and kharishma are bigger stars locally it seems. And Mawhoo is number one right now

actual music fans aren't missing nothing. these people OP are talking about probably aren't even anything more than casual music fans getting on the internet and saying anything and would probably still be yapping even if there was a top 10 show. f em
