Waxing lyrical:

Music felt more like an event back then as it was cooked to perfection and drip fed till it hit your deck. There was also so much more mystique about artistry instead of socialist medes revealing the true cornball on the beats. You'd get a release date, a sliver of info, maybe a review and that was it. It all felt so much more special.

Don't get me wrong, I was swimming in 12s, white labels, C90s and bootlegs of studio sessions as well as those listening preview tapes that had "This is a press copy and not for sale" tags running through it but it was nothing like now where music is so accessible and leaks frequent as you needed a connect way before the net. Man my tapes were the thing of legend as peopled be like "Dang, where'd you get this?" as they heard an exclusive months before the rest or something unfinished with totally different lyrics.

Digital changed the game because it meant everyone could steam in but it ain't the same as the peaks and dips are different. Not to mention that what we'd call clipping back then is now classed as mixing mastered into a brick wall of noise pollution. Its interesting to have witnessed in the flesh this shift from the way it was to the way it is.

A lot of people don't realize how this is responsible for the complete lack of risk in mainstream entertainment, especially movies, as that two bites of the apple, second chance to reup via home distribution (or mix packed singles that kept the tills ringing for the music business) signaled the end of anything beyond formulaic, over engineered singles. Yeah thats it, when was the last time you heard an actual end to end album from a new artist and not just a group of tracks stuck together for distribution.
