Depends on where you learn. I know learning in London is a nightmare just due to how cars are parked. The majority of inner streets look like this

The first time I ever drove my homie was tryna teach me in his car back in hs. The hardest thing for me to learn was turning. We're comin down a hill and got to make a left but I turn too sharp and start heading towards a tree. He starts yelling stop

Me not knowing u use the same foot to brake got a foot on each pedal and start speeding up. He grabs the wheel and we make a sharp turn right through the intersection towards a fence on the other side of the road. Luckily I was able to stop then after we hit the curb. I never seen someone look so shook haha. He never let me drive again and I was cool on learning for a while after that.

Funny timing seeing this thread.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, never needed to drive.

Got a permit, failed the road test twice.

Moved out into the country a few months ago and the Lyft/Uber well is starting to dry up to get to my bus to get into the city for work and the wife usually picked me up.

Got tired of waiting and seeing rides get cancelled so I literally started driving myself to the bus yesterday. About to do that right now and it's pitch black.

Scared as fukk. I'm 35 bruh.

Different for everyone.

Most people ik in NYC didn't start driving until around 21-24. But like others in here said assume literally everyone around you is a dumbass and you'll be fine.

My Sister just let my 13 year old niece drive for the first time a few weeks ago. She sent me a picture of her parking in the Costco parking lot.

Pops got me a go kart when I was around 9 and my mom started taking me to the park and letting me drive at around 11-12 years old. Drivers Ed teacher told me I was his best driver

I was nervous as hell at first but quickly got used to it. Some people already said it but it’s the other drivers you have to worry about.

I will say though driving on an interstate still gives me anxiety. That’s why I’m more of a scenic route person even if it takes a longer time to get where I’m going.

When you first start it’s nerve wrecking, sure. However you should become more comfortable behind the wheel with time.
Unless you’re just naturally anxious.


I wouldn’t say I’m an aggressive driver, per sè. More like an offensive (vs defensive) driver. Lol
Once you aren’t intimidated on the road, you can notice traffic patterns and flows, anticipate other drivers’ moves, sense who is nervous/timid on the road so you can move away, sense who IS actually aggressive so you can move away, etc.


I give my college boyfriend a lot of credit in that regard; he taught me a lot on the road. I was scared behind the wheel and he made sure I mastered the road.
