That faithful winter of 1997, when Queensbridge went nuts finding haunting vocal samples from jazz greats like Nina Simone to rap over, gave us the CRC anthems ‘Alluminatti’ (or ‘Norematti’ if you’re Team NORE instead of Iman THUG) and ‘True Confessions’ via local beat merchant G-Money. This powerful sound eventually bled into Pete Rock’s consciousness and resulted in him utilising this Billie Holiday vocal to bring the 25TaLife sound to his Soul Survivor LP.

The retail version replaces the last two verses with Sticky Fingers and Cappadonna, which kind of makes sense since NORE is on another track anyway, while poor ol’ Meccalicious must have really upset someone because he soon found himself erased from audio existence, doomed to dwell in the shadow recesses of white-label hell.

Meko got screwed something awful...I think he and Pete fell out badly.

Damn shame because his joints with Pete are all dope. His original version of Verbal Murda with Buddha Monk is too ill.

I keep holding hope that Pete will drop his Rude Youth lp but here we are 25 years and nothing.

Classic. I don't even listen to the other version even with Cappa & Sticky being more skilled mcees than Nore & Mekolicious.

This was my favorite era of Nore & Meko's flow is so butter.

I have it on a dj zooted mixtape (a literal tape) that i coppeecin early '98 but that's the place I've ever seen it.

I ended up trading a copy of that mixtape to same collector who leaked trigger the gamblers album to the internet, back in the early 2000s and he uploaded a copy to YouTube but I haven't seen it on there in recent years.

I actually like Cap & Sticky version better.

Another great debate as to who flipped this sample better. Pete or Finesse.

On the album, the best thing about this song is the outro piano beat. Pete used to always do this bullshyt. He'd have a dope ass outro beat for 6-10 seconds that he'd never use for a full track.
