There's been two main uses of the word

A racial slur

And a term of endearment used by black people toward other black people.

White folks shouldn't be hurling racial slurs, and they shouldn't be placing themselves within a culture they don't understand and/or don't belong. Out of respect for this countries history they should not say the word period.

Your argument that this is a term for us only is flawed as evident that I've seen the term of endearment used by black people directed at white people. I've seen Hispanics use the term as well.

Many white people don't know black struggle or pain. Respecting history? Many of them don't respect the stuff going on right now. That's why they can go around saying "All Lives Matter" and "Blue Lives Matter" and completely miss the point of what Black Lives Matter actually means. Your words and expectations of respect and common sense are lost on them.

You clearly don't get the difference between en explanation of what happened and making excuses. An explanation is a breakdown of what happened an excuse is an attempt to justify what happened. There is no justification for him saying what he said. On the flip side if people are gonna use this word commonly then be prepared for what that brings which is fools like him feeling justified saying it too.
