I'm reading these replies, and everyone is basically saying no matter how good you are at your job because we are Black it doesn't matter. So, what are supposed to do, give up?

A question white folk never have to ask themselves. :jbhmm:
Yeah… they should

But since this isn’t the country we are in, it doesn’t. So what do you suggest black people should do?? Be mediocre???

We have a lot more of that now than when we did in the past, when black folks were actually making progress for themselves and every other foreign-born/minority in this country.

Where has that gotten us again?

In a meritocracy, it makes perfect sense…but America really isn’t that… and everyone is looking out for their own
He wasn’t saying it was in America…

And again, what do you cats suggest then? The problem is obvious, even more so now.

Where’s your solutions? Because his seems to be outperforming the others of mediocrity

If your takeaway from the responses in this thread, is for black folk to be mediocre… then I can only assume y’all are being obtuse at this point.

I watched the video before I responded and I disagree

I kind of assume that people striving for success are working hard and not expecting to get it because they're Black. But hard work alone for Black people has literally been proven to still run up against racism

so when he says shyt like he doesn't like politics, its all divisive, and don't worry about DEI or being black just worry about being the best, I really don't understand who the fukk he's talking to.

Would make more sense to say that people should be ready to pivot or create their own avenues for success if they're sure they've become the best.

instead he's perpetuating the idea that if you're the best you can overcome racism, which is meritocratic nonsense that does not apply to our people. In fact, it's been used against our people: like when they hold up Asians as model minorities that overcame racism in order to use them against us

I didn't hear him say don't worry about DEI. I heard since its not here anymore just focus on being the best you can and let the chips fall where they may

nikkas have been the best at a lot of things and guess what, it didn’t matter… White boy denied a lot of great black talent simply based on race… being great or better than most wasn’t enough in a lot of cases historically speaking. The only thing we can really do to mitigate this is invest in one another whenever possible… whether it’s in the form of mentoring, teaching, sponsorship, etc…. if someone has potential, those of us with means need to help that person realize it…. Otherwise, it’s gonna be a wrap for us sooner than later

Not here to argue with you all day nikka.. what do you suggest black folks do then other than being better than their counterparts and competition for roles?

And know, that’s your takeaway from what I’m saying. I never once called black folks mediocre nikka, I said that they should outperform mediocre to get around racist gatekeeping shyt.

Again, waiting for any alternatives, since you mad and want to argue over shyt not worth arguing over

Where didn’t it matter :dahell:

Do you nikkas need a list of successful black people, or black pioneers in their fields?

Not every black person who was successful was shucking and jiving or selling drugs to their community

No. You’re talking about those who are exceptional that broke through… You don’t see the 1000s that were great who got turned away or denied because of race… the exception doesn’t make the rule…

Who :mjlol:

Pump my chest when it was literally the last thing I said :mjlol:

TF you mad for? And why would he even say it if he was overlooking the world yall live in?

it’s based on the reality of when you are the best there is only so long you can be denied :yeshrug: especially on some racist shyt.

But I knew nikkas we’re going to want to argue. Just looking for anything to be mad about, when nothing he said was even worth it. I should just say that we need to strive for being mediocre then?:yeshrug:
I don’t think anyone is mad (except you, maybe?). At least I’m not. Am I not allowed to just disagree with his sentiment? Things like Affirmative action and DEI weren’t created randomly. They were a response to an existing problem. A problem that we are just reminding people still exists. Maybe not to the extent of 40-50 years ago, but still exists, nonetheless.

Who said anything about striving for mediocre. People are just saying that being “the best” isn’t always enough. This is a known idea in even in Economics, because people are humans and not “Econs”. Humans make flawed and illogical decisions based on emotions. And race garners a lot of emotion, both positively and negatively.

It is what it is. It’s not a big deal to disagree
