The problem is two fold....

People pretending that analytics hasn't been around for 50 years..

People dumbing down the entire practice of applying advanced stats to mean "shoot more 3's"....

On another note... Phil is pulling off the biggest heist that New York has seen since Lufthansa

I've never seen such insecurity from a coach who was part of so many winning teams. Maybe Auriemma comes close.

After what Houston and Boston did in their respective game 7s in the CF I'd say this thread aged well. The Finals was not a 3 point shoot out.
What got them to the Conference Finals in and to game 7 in the first place? :usure:

For the playoffs 4 of the top 5 teams in 3PAs/g were the 4 conference finals squads. Both the Cavs and the Warriors launched up over 30 3s a game in the Finals. GSW was taking 34 a night.

Umm their defense did. Both Boston and Houston shot 31% for their respective series.

And this is why you have to watch games instead of looking at box scores. Golden St won the Finals largely in the midrange/post with KD. Cavs shot below 30% in the series and most of the damage was done by LeBron below the 3 point line. Again the Finals was not a 3 point shoot out despite the number of attempts.

The losers didn't shoot well? :ohhh:
This is the way great teams play now. Just accept that :yeshrug:
The game plan of the top teams involves launching up 3s, there's no denying that.

Basketball is a simple game.

The closer you are to the basket, the better chance you have at scoring. All these analytics and BS we have been hearing about the Warriors this season is in the middle of getting obliterated and I'm just sitting back like :win:
That's not true at all, especially for actual players. Maybe a person who doesn't play? Professionals get comfortable with shots they have perfected over the course of their lives.

Bruce Bowen was a terrible free throw shooter but would hit 3's very consistently :francis:

I'm always suspicious of the sample sizes for some of these advanced analytics.

There's so much that doesn't currently get captured in the stuff they flash on ESPN or whatever. Everything from matchups to player conditioning, effort levels, and coaching decisions.

Plus, don't the best teams take a "regular season is practice for the playoffs" approach? Like try different things on purpose just to A-B test them against a division opponent they see multiple times a year.

I don't know. I'm not a hater on the stats by any means, I just don't think they tell nearly as much of the story as they're portrayed to.
