While I enjoy Gamepass, and what it brings to the table, their strategy kind've exists in a vacuum.
While yes, it is a way to put games in front of more eyes, it completely ignores that a lot of those games are available elsewhere, PLUS other games that are exclusive that might interest people. It's only so long that offering old and/or third party games for free can be your only hook. Eventually, there has to be something big that's only available via GamePass. I know they need time for all their new acquisitions to come through with new games, but some of the XBox faithful have been waiting four years fork that big game to come along. You gotta reward their faith sooner than later.
