Xbox boss Phil Spencer has revisited comments made earlier this week in which he said 1080p TV owners shouldn’t bother upgrading to Xbox Scorpio.

Yesterday the exec claimed that 4K was the central purpose of Scorpio, so those without a 4K set should get an Xbox One S instead. These comments seemed odd, as downsampling (that is, running in a game at a higher resolution than that of the screen) is a common practise for PC gamers and offers many visual benefits, not least of which is excellent antialiasing.

“If you have an HDTV and you don't have a 4K TV, should you go buy Project Scorpio? I guess some people will do that, and obviously Scorpio is going to be running the 6 teraflop version of a game, and that version of a game, even when downsampled to HD will look different than the game running at 1080p,” he told Giant Bomb, as reported by Videogamer.

"Scorpio is more powerful than the original Xbox [One], four-and-a-half times. And the 6 teraflops actually will obviously impact the games in the way they play."

He also added that while buying a Scorpio to play existing Xbox One games is not something he feels comfortable selling to the public as it’s not a leading feature, it will offer benefits.

"If you look at a game like Halo 5, that implements something called dynamic scaling, so as scenes get more complex, in order to maintain 60fps they will actually change the resolution that you're running at,” he explained. “So then if you run that game on Project Scorpio you're actually going to be at the max frame rate of that game more often.

"I'm trying to be transparent with people about where we are in the design of Project Scorpio and what it was designed for. It was designed in order to enable these high-fidelity 4K experiences. So some of the existing games will actually run a little better if they're using dynamic scaling, but I wouldn't buy Scorpio to run your existing library of Xbox One games [better].”

Microsoft’s messaging this week has certainly been a little muddled, and this has led to criticism.Some of which is perfectly balanced and fair.

To reveal an upgraded version of your current console, that may or may not run games better than the standard SKU, and then immediately announce its successor, which won’t be available for a year and half, is questionable to say the least.....

It's stupid to say that. He HIMSELF said that devs can choose how to boost some games on the Scorpio. It doesn't need to be 4K. A 1080P/60fps game with much higher quality anti aliasing, better visual effects and more detailed rendering is a benefit that's very worth it even if you don't have 4K.

It's literally dumb to say it's not worth it. PC gamers don't upgrade only for resolution. My PC plays games at 1080P and yet those games look better than the same game at 1080P on consoles.

This is a 1080P/60fps game on PS4(MGSV TPP) That's a significant boost.
Even if you can't see much through a video, in person the differences are easily seen.

Here's the question you always have to ask yourself. if you had 4 choices. which would you choose:
1. 4k at 60fps--but the game play is just so so. the AI is no better than they were on the xbox 360.
2. 4k at 30 fps- but the game play is on point. AI is wayyy better than on the xbox one let alone the 360.
3. 1080p at 60fps- see #2
4. 1080p at 30fps - game play is fantastic. Ai is like a real person. much much better than the xbox one and 360. not even close to those two way better.

yall are so busy yelling 1080p 60fps. and now 4k 60fps. are you will to sacrifice gameplay for a better looking game? i know i aint. the reason being these games look darn good already anyway at 900p.

It's going to fail if this is their mentality.

Here are my reasons...
-The purpose of this console is to play games in 4K resolution and for VR shyt.
-The traditional games (non-VR games) will be on the Xbox One
-They cannot go into the PC gaming arena and expect to flex for a sustained period of time

This is a case where they have given the consumer too many options that are more affordable and more attractive than shelling out the money for Scorpio.

The way you're framing this, implies that MS is ready for this console to be a niche/enthusiast one and not something for the masses.

I see so many threads and comments about how this gen sucks and how old gen games are SO MUCH BETTER than current gen games.
By comparison the graphics of those same old gen games are horrible.
Then when hardware is discussed, the conversation seems to focus entirely on graphics, when just 2 seconds ago everyone was just saying that the absolute best games had/have whack graphics.
When it comes to console only gamers it makes even less sense.
If graphics are THAT important to you, then you aren't gaming on the right platform to begin with.

You do realize that the games are going to be developed on Xbox One/PS4/PC right??
You're not about to get a Battlefield 1 version for Project Scorpio only that will have 120 player maps or something.

You're not about to get Forza 7 with 24 player races. It's going to be the same base game with improved visuals... like PC. It's rare to see a PC version offer completely new modes/features that the console version don't have. Only game i remember like that was Battlefield 3 having 64 player matches while the PS3/360 version only had 32 player matches but that was due to a 7/8 year old console being outdated.


There's not going to be a "different" version you buy, the Xbox One game will just run on the Scorpio with the visual boosts. There's not going to be any "AI/Gameplay" related changes because of the extra power. The game has to run on Xbox one too.

You clearly don't understand how these things work. Traditional consoles are dead. There are numerous benefits to having more horsepower regardless of resolution.

I like the video so here is what looks like is going to happen. This is clearly a PC like model, he dodged the "single package" question by Jeff. Essentially it will be like launching a steam game and in some games they automatically detect your hardware and then recommend how the game should run...allowing you to tweak. You won't be able to do that on the xbox one because the audience is different, the Scorpio will default to 4K if the source is available and then downsample to 1080P if that's the detected resolution.

because that price tag is about to be crazy. he's preparing us for it. he's letting yall know right now. if you aint got money to dedicate to your gaming RIG. then go get that cheaper XBox S which looks sweet as hell and its smaller with a lightweight price tag.i got a funny feeling yall aint going to want any parts of that price tag when it drops.

then think about it. what if you didnt have a 4k tv still. you would not only have to drop $700+ on a system then you would have to drop at minimum $700+ on a 4kTV(the price will keep coming down year after year).

thats a minimum $1400 purchase. Dont Do it unless you got the money to blow to get a brand new 4k TV anytime you want even if you dont have one now. Or you already got one and you're the type of gamer that Needs that perfect clarity on the screen. if thats you. get it. if that aint you. DO NOT BLOW YOUR RENT MONEY.
