The Wrong Side of the Tracks

I was just working out, listening to "The Listening" by Little Brother, and I just noticed in "Whatever You Say" Phonte didn't rhyme his verse yet it was banging, and flowing with the track. He even had the nerve to say "I got your head still bobbin' and my verse didn't rhyme":pachaha:

Little Brother - Whatever You Say - YouTube

I heard that song a million times, and this is the first time that I noticed he really didn't rhyme the whole verse. I deserve :dahell:

In the words of Q-tip, "Ayo that kid is NIIIICE".

I'd have been impressed........if Kool Keith and Ced Gee didn't do that first 25 years ago......

Ced starts @ 1:24, Keith starts @ 2:45

Man, you aren't putting me on to something new:umad:

I was there when this came out, and distinctly remember it being played on the radio. I taped it, listened to it the next day, and was hyped about that drum beat. Ever since people stayed jacking that loop, to this day.

I like Kool Keith, but he is not keeping my attention with that rhyme. Which is why it probably was something I barely remember as being special. Yeah, I remember him kicking some extraordinary shyt, and mad scientist shyt, but it didn't make me visualize what he was saying so much that I didn't realize he wasn't rhyming.

That is the whole point of me making this thread, I was into the lyrics so much, as well as the actual song and visualizing what was said that I didn't realize he wasn't rhyming. Everything was put together perfect. When I hear "ego tripping" I imagine them just rhyming n a studio or a room or something like that. When I hear "whatever you say", I envision them in a club kicking it to chicks, and how the girls are reacting. I see the club, the environment, all of that. When I listen to music, I have a tendency to make a music video in my head, and get the feel of the music. If I don't get a vision that keeps my mind focused to reenact a quality video, I tend to not really get into the song, and start getting technical about the beat or rhymes.

Phonte was able to keep me focused, and not recognize he wasn't rhyming. That's why it gave me :ahh: feeling when I did realize what was going on. Big Pooh did his thing to, though.

If Keith & Ced hadn't done it first, I'd have been impressed. Since Phonte used a style that had been invented two and a half decades prior, he isn't an innovator. It's fine that you get hyped about something that's actually been done before. I'm impressed by those who do something truly different which is why Ego Trippin' >>>> Whatever You Say.
