To me, the absolute king of 'leveling up' is Timbaland and it's not even close.

From the moment One in A Million came out, dude would switch his sound every year or half-year to out-run the biters. And he'd succeed for years until the mid 2000s. Then he had a little lull, and went right back to murdering shyt with Timberlake. shyt is fukking incredible in hindsight.

Premo leveled up a few times. This is one of the major ones to me:

great choice. And totally agree

^^^ This elevated The Neptunes. They had done Mase's "Lookin' At Me", but it's the one above that took them to the next level. They'd really arrived with this one.

There's some truth to this. In the 90's, his introduction on the Hip Hop side was Missy's "The Rain", which was completely different at the time. Then there was Timbaland & Magoo's "Up Jumps Da Boogie" some months later. Then the next year he came with the Jay Z track.

^^^ Sonically, he had his own little movement that spread and everybody latched on. It wasn't a succession of hits, it was like wow moments and game changers.
