'Pick up a prostitute, your photo will go here'

HUNTINGTON, W.Va, (WSAZ) --
The Huntington Police Department is unveiling a new tactic to combat prostitution.

3rd Avenue warns prospective customers of prostitutes that their picture will be displayed on the billboard if they are arrested.

A second, traditional billboard with the same warning will be erected within two weeks in the 800 block of 6th Avenue.

This new effort is part of a comprehensive approach to the prostitution problem in the city and the larger drug problem that spawns it.

Kyle McDermott lives on 6th Avenue and says he sees prostitution in his neighborhood regularly. He believes the new billboard will be effective.

"People will do it less because they know they'll be publicly chastised for it," McDermott said.

Neighbor Nic Webb worries the tactic is excessive.

"You have to remember there are families involved on their half too," Webb said. "Their kids go to school. They could get made fun of because of something their parent has chosen. I just don't think it's the right thing to do."

Police say since Wednesday three more men have been arrested for soliciting prostitution. They say the men, who range in age from 40 to 58, are from Willowood, Proctorville and Chesapeake, Ohio. All three were cited in Huntington Municipal Court.

The arrests were made by detectives with the Special Investigations Bureau and officers assigned to anti-prostitution patrol.
