Yeah you do. An imposing force at the rim is the most valuable thing you can have on defense. They're the anchor. Every one of the best defensive teams ever has had an anchor down there alternating and blocking shots and making it hard to score in the paint.
Except for the dyansty Bulls
The only way to offset not having a guy like that making it hard to score at the rim is to have a bunch of dudes flying around playing insane help defense and lock down man to man defense. First 3 peat it was Jordan, Pippen, and Horace Grant. 2nd it was Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman. None of those guys were altering shots at the rim. They were all incredible man and help defenders, some of the smartest defenders ever, and that's why it worked.

Imagine if Lebron could handcheck offensive players like in the 90s. He would of been the best defender back then.
