If you know Monty ain’t the guy and the money isn’t an issue - why keep him around?

Because you're telling future coaches that they'll potentially have a short leash if they want you gone. The owner desperately wanted Monty and threw the bag to get him to only end up firing him a year later. That should steer name brand coaches away as the optics create the impression that they won't have a fair chance to succeed.
It's not really any different what people are saying about the Lakers job and how it's essentially a turnstile.

I think Monty is a great guy
But he was going out of his way to make sure that Detroit had every reason to fire him. During the losing streak especially - there was WILD shyt he was doing before they got in the 20+ straight losses territory that got major attention.
The Pistons weren't tanking this year. They still found ways to look worse than the Hornets, Grizzlies, and Blazers who at times had entire rotations of journeymen.

The same exact thing could have been said and was said about Monty though based on the contract that they gave him and how desperate they were to sign him. Let's not have revisionist history about it because it didn't work out.
They soured on him pretty quickly, so whose to say that it won't happen to the next coach?
That's something that candidates should definitely asked in the interview.
The Pistons had $65 million reasons to keep Monty and still let him go and the next coach is obviously going to be making less than that.

Pistons have presented the con of goin BPA(which I’m a prrponent of) during the lottery. Ivey looking like a bait because he and Cade don’t work well together. They drafted a bunch of non shooters and the result is their guards have no lane to drive into. They draft exceptionally well in the 2nd round but don’t keep those guys imagine if they kept two players out KCP, Bruce Bowen, or Middleton. Also those guys are champions and were major contributors to their teams winning. The pistons have no vision

Team is going to be bad either way, and the next guy won't be the guy either. This team is a 3-5 year project. The next coach will be fired in 2-3 years lol.
