Sources -- Maurice Cheeks, Detroit Pistons agree on contract - ESPN

Sources: Pistons tab Maurice Cheeks

Former All-Star point guard Maurice Cheeks is getting his third shot as an NBA head coach.

Cheeks, an assistant in Oklahoma City for the past four seasons, on Monday formally agreed to take over as coach of the Detroit Pistons as the replacement for the ousted Lawrence Frank, according to sources close to the process.

ESPN.com reported on June 2 that a third interview in Detroit, after two previous meetings with Pistons owner Tom Gores, appeared to nudge him into the lead for the job ahead of co-finalist Nate McMillan.

Cheeks has posted a career mark of 284-286 in stints coaching the Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers, with three first-round playoff exits in his six full seasons as a head coach.

Besides former Portland and Seattle coach McMillan, Detroit also interviewed Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew, former Phoenix Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer and New York Knicks assistant Darrell Walker.

The Pistons announced in May that 11-time coaching champion Phil Jackson was consulting Gores on the search in a bow to his longtime friendship with Gores, but the hiring of Cheeks came without the candidate Jackson is highest on -- Indiana Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw -- ever interviewing for the job.

SINY!!
Ehhh, its not a desirable job. Aside from the bigs, they really dont have anything else.....theres no plan or direction going forward.

The jobs in Denver, LA & BK are a lot more desirable. They werent gonna get a Brian Shaw, Karl, etc anyways

The Pistons are a sleeping giant with those two bigs and cap room this summer. They shouldn't blow it like they did with Gordon and Villanueva a few years back. I still like Brandon Knight's game and think he will be a good point guard in the league, but not if they keep messing with him and move him to shooting guard. In a couple of years they could make some noise.

i dont want to blow money on oj or iggy. we got a good 4 years before we really competing for eastern dominance and by then iggy contract will be up or close too it.

i like mo so imma give him a chance that he'll blossom here like i did for frank. we got good young pieces we just need to get it together now

So you're saying...low key, Pistons got a core??
