In general, he's probably right. But when it's winning time, strategy trumps "bravery". Sometimes zone is necesary to exploit the other team's weaknesses.

You do realize that the zone is a big part of the reason for the rise in 3pt shooting right? All this talk about spacing is a direct result of squads being able to pack the paint against dominant off the dribble and post up players. Without a zone, you can put 4 guys that can't shoot outside of 2 feet out there around an elite individual and have them all lined up around the 3 pt line and the other team would have to honor them. Bomani is absolutely right. If you can't guard your man, you shouldn't be out there .

If going by NBA offenses and defenses this doesn't make sense. You play zone because offenses are so good, you'd be stupid to limit yourself to 1 on 1 defense. It takes so much damn energy to play defense in the modern NBA you'd just be giving up points by stifling your help defense.

Bomani doesn't seem like the type of person who should be calling anybody a coward from an athletic/physical perspective.

But he was talking about pickup games and college more so than the NBA when he said this, if I remember correctly (it's from a few months back). It's not really cowardly, it's just admitting that you, as a team, can't match up with the other team individually. I play basketball weekly with a group of guys who play a lot of zone; it's a little weird for me because I'd rather just play one-on-one, but I understand the reasoning behind it.
