PMP Certified in project management - what next?

Most companies are run by idiots. At my previous job once they got rid of the PM's every project fell apart. You didn't have anyone that could hold groups equally responsible anymore. And people picked and chooses whether they followed established guidelines.

I left a year later because I wasn't getting anything accomplished. Because all these projects we're at a standstill. In the IT field if you aren't constantly learning new skills it severely impacts your earning potential. So with no new technology projects getting off the ground there isn't much reason for me to stick around.

So at my six month review I told them straight up I want to be a project manager. Becuase I know they're getting cashed out.

My manager told me reach out to the director

Guess he didn't think I would. I emailed breh last week, we had a MS teams meeting today and I will srart shadowing a PMO 4 hours a week.

Now this thread came into play becuase I figured I could get some project manager lingo before I spoke with the director

Just don't be one of those PM'S with no idea about the logistics of the work packages you're managing. Expect a three day task to be done in a couple of hours to meet a deadline brehs

Lots if companies have out major IT projects onhold due to COVID. But even before that companies we're shedding Project Managers and forcing IT personnel to manage their own projects.

Last 3 jobs I had there was neery a project manager in site. The one job that still used a PM. Only brought her in to wrap up projects by scheduling go-live meetings. Most IT Departments are terrible at managing projects. Because their forced to do them in addition to their already heavy workload. Sure you might get paid well but who wants to bother with the headache.

Why would you want to be a PM? They generally make less money then engineers, unless you negotiated badly regarding your salary.

Not true. I'm an Engr for a defense contractor and all the PM's make considerably more than we do, given the same # years & experience

Ive been a Project manager for 7 years. Got a PMP cert last year. Starting to realize I am a little too comfortable in my current role doing marketing project management. I am looking at changing careers strictly as a money grab for 2-3 years. Possibly in tech. Any suggestions on where to start learning with money being most important? Javascript, Python, HTML5?

Word, figured I should give an update on this. Basically I still have my PMP (you have to renew every 3 years). To renew you have to complete 60 hours worth of project management contributions. That can be done by taking CEU/PDU courses, watching webinars (1 webinar = 1 hour), doing presentations about project management or contributing to the project management discipline (I write articles about project management and post on forums which allows me to stack up a ton of hours quickly). Don't let your PMP expire, you have to retake the test and that test is a bytch. And having an expired PMP is sort of frowned upon by some recruiters.

I decided to get another cert afterwards which is the CSM or Certified Scrum Master. This certification is REALLY easy to get in comparison to the PMP. I took a weekend course 9-5. The exam is so easy to pass. I used beardedeagle.com to get this cert. They are Black Owned so definitely worth rocking with them. If you are into tech/IT, this is the cert to get. The sprint/agile methodology is what tech companies look for more than the knowledge presented in PMP.

And then more recently, I went after getting a change management certificate which is a CCMP. The class I took was GARBAGE though so I don't feel comfortable taking the CCMP test yet and will probably take another class in the future. That being said, project management is a discipline that is still hella lucrative. Depending on where you go, (I left marketing Project Management as it didn't have enough money and returned to tech/media) having a CSM or PMP or both is going to get you way more opportunities then trying to get PM jobs without.

I'm looking to getting the CSM certification, but I'm also looking at the CSPO. Is the CSPO a good certification?

I think it depends on your experiences and where you are at in your career. Are you currently a product owner? If so, the CSPO would be good so you can sort of fit in both buckets of being a product owner but also learning some tricks of the trade being a project manager. That being said, I don't hear as much talk about CSPO as I do about CSM.

If you are looking to focus on project management, then I would suggest focusing on CSM.

I’m looking at this now actually. Does the price of the course (I’m seeing $759) cover the 2-day course and the exam? Or is it just the two-day course, and you have to register and pay for the exam after?
